Project type

    Process Design and Instructional Writing

Date

    January 2023

Role

    Technical Writer

Description

This project was completed for my Information Architecture class and involved the creation of a comprehensive, step-by-step guide for navigating the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) website to register a new student. The guide was designed to assist families unfamiliar with the CBE system, ensuring clarity and accessibility for both local and international users. The process included technical writing, user-centric design, and visual aids organized in an easy-to-follow format.

Skills Applied

Technical writing, information architecture and design, research, document formatting, usability testing

Contributions & Collaboration

    - Wrote detailed step-by-step instructions for tasks such as creating a SchoolEngage account, adding a student, and completing the registration process.
    - Addressed all critical steps, including pre-screening, documentation requirements, and declarations, to ensure compliance with CBE policies.
    - Created a clear Table of Contents to allow users to locate specific sections efficiently.
    - Designed sections to correspond with the actual steps on the CBE website, ensuring the instructions mirrored the user experience.
    - Simplified complex processes into easy-to-digest steps, paired with clear action verbs such as "Click," "Move Cursor," and "Attach."
    - Highlighted optional steps and common issues (e.g., documentation upload errors) to proactively address user pain points.
    - Gathered feedback from peers and potential users to refine the procedure for maximum clarity and usability.
    - Incorporated suggestions, such as emphasizing document upload steps and including troubleshooting tips, to improve user experience.

    Collaboration:
This project was completed collaboratively with Susan Westgard.

Outcome

The final deliverable was a professionally written and structured procedure that enabled first-time users to successfully navigate the registration process for alternative programs within the Calgary Board of Education. The guide provided clarity for complex steps, such as pre-screening, documentation uploads, and navigating lotteries.
